Quotes for the Fridge
I personally hold the belief that we haven't evolved much intellectually since we got the bicameral mind.
Since then, the big evolutionary gains we've made have been external tools - things we can pass down and around.
Inside, we've all been the same emotional monkeys/vikings/worse things for a couple thousand years. I think we'll probably be the same for the next couple thousand, as well. That's alright, because we've gotten pretty good at building tools.
One such tool is the simple, unassuming quote.
Monkeys Are Smrt
To me, within every quote, is the first discovery of fire. A good quote is the hallmark of an invention with words. Every one sets us apart from the bees as much as any hammer, nail or nuke.
It's dangerous to think ourselves superior to those who preceded us. If Oedipus was here, he'd take a break from banging his Mom to remind us - it's hubris. We're more similar to our early predecesors than we'd care to admit. I could argue this for hours, but instead, I'll let this guy say it better:
Over the years, I've been collecting quotes. I input them into a small page I've build, print it on magnet paper, then cut them up and put them on my fridge. I share them with my daughters, and hope that one day they will collect their own. I seek the wisdom of the past, to use as the transferrable tool it is.
In that spirit, I built a small page to make printing these magnets easy: it lays the quotes out cleanly, one per card, ready to cut and stick. Find it here.
